Study of research trends with relation to the treatment and utilization of municipal solid waste: an applied bibliometric analysis

Abstract

Abstract: According to World Bank statistics, it is estimated that the annual amount of Municipal Solid Waste - RSM generated in the world by 2014 was 1.3 billion tons, with the possibility of increasing to 2.2 billion tons by 2025. The predominant proportion of RSM corresponds to organic solid waste or bio-waste, which is defined as biodegradable organic waste of vegetable and/or animal origin, susceptible to biological degradation and which is generated in the domestic and commercial environment as proposed by the European Union in its directive 2008/98/CE. This is how Waste to Energy - WtE becomes a promising area for the possible energy use of RSM worldwide, as it is a link in the supply chains of production and services because according to the principles of circular economy it is necessary to keep more time the waste generated within the chain with preference for practices such as recycling and use. In the search to know the WtE advance tendencies as a knowledge area, processes such as technological surveillance are used, which is based on systematic disciplines such as bibliometrics, with the objective of establishing the advance state of a determined knowledge area, starting by establishing a bibliographic search route in indexed databases, where a search equation composed of key words complemented by Boolean connectors is used. Subsequently, these searches are introduced into specialized open-source software such as Vosviewer® and SciMAT® to facilitate the calculation of the main bibliometric indicators (relevance of authors, topics and leading journals) and finely establish strategic maps for the development of related research fields. As a final result, it is established that there is a wide interest in focusing on the area of decisions regarding the selection of WtE technologies applied in the context of biomass or biowaste, including areas of technical-economic analysis for urban planning of treatment and use of RSM aligned with institutional plans.
